FPGA JPEG Compression IP Expands Gidel’s Portfolio

Gidel, a long-time leader in FPGA-based Vision and Imaging solutions, has introduced a new JPEG Compression IP designed for real-time processing on high-speed and embedded systems. This JPEG FPGA solution combines low FPGA resource usage with very high performance, making it both compact and exceptionally efficient. It also supports virtually unlimited image widths — a rare capability among hardware-based JPEG engines.

Designed for High-Bandwidth JPEG on FPGA Vision Applications

The Gidel JPEG Compression IP targets demanding applications that require real-time compression at high pixel rates. It is suitable for large-format cameras, multi-camera systems, and memory-limited devices that must compress data immediately on the FPGA. Typical use cases include field recording systems, broadcasting, surveillance, smart cities, embedded vision, and autonomous vehicles.

Benefits of real-time JPEG compression

According to Ofer Pravda, VP Marketing & Sales at Gidel, real-time compression offers several system-level advantages. Compressed data can be saved directly during acquisition rather than stored uncompressed in large memory banks. Additionally, compressed data transfers more efficiently to host memory, improving total storage bandwidth and reducing system load — an important benefit of JPEG FPGA processing.

The JPEG Compression IP integrates into Gidel’s FPGA infrastructure, allowing customers to create optimized frame grabbers or embedded imaging pipelines quickly. It is supported by Gidel’s established development ecosystem, including infrastructure cores, FPGA processing tools, and application frameworks. This reduces integration time and helps customers deploy advanced systems under tight project deadlines.
